Family-Friendly Things to Do in Chicago

Chicago’s world-famous architecture and cultural offerings are what make this city on of the most popular destinations in all of the U.S. But, it’s not all just fun for the adults. In areas like Chicago’s West Loop and Wicker Park, there’s no shortage of relaxing parks and exciting activities that the whole family can enjoy.

So, let’s take a look at some of the favorite spots families in the Windy City go to enjoy the lovely spring weather:

Mary Bartelme Park

This West Loop park is great for any occasion or choice of play and has a spectacular view of the Chicago skyline. The children’s play area is ADA accessible, which allows for inventive, non-linear play without traditional play equipment. Of course, it does also have swings, slides and a lot of other cool things to run around on. There’s also a sunken dog park for your K9 companions to enjoy while you engage in your activities.

Brooklyn Boulders

Take the whole crew to this expansive West Loop rock climbing facility this spring for some “extreme” bonding! Brooklyn Boulders offers classes for beginners and advanced climbers. So, come together as a family unit, and encourage each other to reach new heights.

Wicker Park

Wicker Park’s four-acre recreation area may be smaller than other parks around Chicago, but it’s packed with plenty of recreational areas and gorgeous spaces to relax. You’ll always find residents sitting, enjoying a sunny day by the fountain or playing a game of pick-up basketball on the courts. There’s also a field house in the middle of the park that contains a gymnasium and meeting rooms that overlook a lush public garden.

The 606

This formerly abandoned stretch of elevated railway track that was turned into a beautiful parkway is one of the most unique parks in Chicago. It runs through Logan Square, Humboldt Park, Wicker Park and Bucktown. The 2.7-mile path provides a quick way to travel east and west on the North Side, connecting several parks and public art installations. Whether you choose to slowly stroll or ride your bike, it’s a beautiful way to enjoy the spring air.

Kohl Children’s Museum

The Kohl Children’s Museum, though 30 minutes outside of the Loop, is well worth adding to your list of family adventures. The museum features 17 permanent exhibits that are sure to set your child’s imagination into high gear. With the ever-popular vet center, a water works station and a life-like simulated Whole Foods Market, it’s a fun-filled experience for everyone!

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum

For a fun, interactive and educational experience, don’t miss the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. This museum uses hands-on exhibits to explore Illinois ecology and natural history. Don’t miss the butterfly greenhouse, and be sure to go splash around in the water tables to explore how rivers work. You can even learn how the museum hatches and raises wetland animals like turtles.

Chicago Children’s Museum

For a little adventure by the water, the Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier outpost will spark imaginations. Kids have the chance to dig for bones on a dinosaur expedition, tinker with real tools in a DIY maker space, and paint or sketch in an art studio. This is just one of those can’t-miss attractions that you’ll wish you’d taken the family to sooner!

Don’t miss out on all of the family-friendly activities in and around Chicago this spring. Get out there, enjoy the beautiful, warming weather, and enjoy the company of your loved ones in all of the exciting adventures that this city has to offer.
