5 Things Every New Chicago Resident Should Know
Thousands of people move to Chicago each year looking for new opportunities, new culture and a new life and many don’t know exactly what they’re in for until they finally make the move. It’s important for new residents to take the time to really get to know the city and what it has to offer. Below is a list of five things every Chicago resident needs to know. Read on to become familiar with your new city and why it’s a good place to be.
Where You Live in Chicago Defines you to other Residents
Most local residents are very familiar with the 77 different neighborhoods around Chicago, and where you choose to live is going to help define you to other people. The North side is trendy and known for shopping and music. The South side is known for cultural events, the West side is known for restaurants, churches and monuments and Downtown is where all the action is.
You Won’t Want to Use Personal Vehicles Much
Getting around Chicago in your own personal car can be a very difficult and frustrating thing to do, especially during peak travel times. Instead, rely on public transit whenever you can. The train system known as the “L” is affordable and using that along with buses will help you get where you need to. Biking or using a cab can also help you get where you need to go, and there is even a pedestrian walkway system if you prefer to walk around.
Winter is Chilling
Chicago winters are very cold and you need to dress for the setting. Stock up on very warm clothing and dress for warmth while out or you’ll wish that you did. If you’re used to a warmer climate your first winter will be somewhat of a shock, but it’s something that you’ll get used to with time.
The City is Built Around a Grid System
Chicago is built on a grid with eight blocks per mile. East and west addresses fall on either side of State Street, and north and south addresses fall on one side or the other of Madison street. Remember the grid system and you’ll always know where you are and how to get to the city center. It take a bit of time learning your away around the city, but once you understand the grid you really can’t get lost anymore.
Neighbors Make Friends Easily
Get out and talk with your neighbors. You probably have many of them close by and they could become some of your best friends. They’re right around you, and offer good sources of amusement when things get cold outside. Make yourself a few local friends on your block and you’ll always have something to do.
There is so much about Chicago that people find enchanting. The architecture in Chicago is historic with many buildings being influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. If you’ve just made the move to Chicago, and need tips for finding the perfect first investment property or if you plan to move here soon, spend some time getting to know the area. You’re going to love it.
