4 Things to Do in Chicago in 2017: A Bucket List for Natives, Newcomers, and Visitors

Chicago is known for a number of things. For example, most Americans have heard of a Chicago-style deep dish pizza, or perhaps they’ve enjoyed CHICAGO The Musical. The list of major movies that have been filmed in the Windy City is seemingly endless, and let’s not forget the very nefarious Mr. Al Capone. It doesn’t have to be all about notoriety, however. Living in Chicago means having a world of art, history, and excitement just outside your door; get out and enjoy everything that our hometown has to offer! Here’s a bucket list of 4 things to do in Chicago in 2017:

Chicago Free Museum Days

While nobody will ever say that cultural enrichment is unimportant, there’s no question that many of these activities can carry a pretty hefty price tag. Lucky for us, Illinois museums are mandated by law to offer at least 52 days per year of free admission to Illinois residents. Check out the list of participating museums HERE, and don’t forget to bring your driver’s license or Illinois state ID card.

Catch a Live Performance at Chicago Riverwalk

Grab all of your favorite people and head over to the Riverwalk, which runs along the majestic Chicago river. There, you’ll find plenty of things to do, including art exhibitions, learning opportunities, and one-of-a-kind dining options. All of this is overshadowed, however, by live performances featuring many of your favorite local acts. Keep an eye on their events calendar HERE.

Celebrate Navy Pier’s Centennial Anniversary

Can you believe it? Our beloved Navy Pier is officially 100 years old! We should all make a point of giving this Chicago landmark the recognition that is has earned over the last century. Start by taking a ride on the Centennial Wheel, which now offers enclosed and heated gondolas for year-round enjoyment. You can purchase your tickets ahead of time HERE. Then, in February, celebrate Chicago’s multicultural heritage with its week-long event entitled Neighborhoods around the world. In March, head over to the pier for the Chicago Flower and Garden Show.

Throughout the year, you can expect to hear more about the many new programs and events that are being added to Navy Pier’s repertoire, so keep your eyes and ears open for updates!

Go on an Architectural Tour of Chicago

Frank Lloyd Wright, although very noteworthy, was not the only architect to contribute to Chicago’s absolutely stunning built environment. There is a long list of others, including Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham, and so many others. Make a group activity of researching and planning your route through Chicagoland, and be sure to bring a camera! Without a doubt, there’s going to be plenty of special moments to capture as you tour the Windy City.

That’s one thing about our city that never seems to fade. It’s a magical, lively place, and it’s hard to think that anyone would ever want to live anywhere else.
